Rapid Interval vs Pulsating vs Static Pumping: what’s the difference?
All three modes create controlled negative pressure. What changes is the pressure pattern: Static holds near a target, Pulsating adds smooth rhythmic variation, and Rapid Interval Pumping (RIP) repeats faster rise-and-ease cycles.

The short answer
Three ways to deliver a programmed vacuum session
Static, Pulsating and RIP are pressure-delivery patterns—not three different medical treatments. Static provides the steadiest hold. Pulsating provides a smoother wave around the target. RIP creates faster, more distinct intervals. The best fit depends on which sensation and pattern you can use comfortably and consistently.
“Pulse pumping” is commonly used as shorthand on this page. SmartTract’s documented mode name is Pulsating Pumping. Rapid Interval Pumping (RIP) is SmartTract terminology for its faster interval mode; it should not be treated as a universal clinical protocol used by every manufacturer or research paper.

How each mode works
The pressure curve changes—not the basic vacuum mechanism
A vacuum erection device lowers pressure around the penis so blood is drawn into erectile tissue. SmartTract’s modes change how the controller builds, maintains and eases that vacuum.
Mode 01
Static Pumping
The controller pumps until the selected target is reached, then actively maintains pressure near that level. When the programmed vacuum time ends, pressure drops to the release level.
Feels like
A steady hold with a clear release phase.
Useful for understanding
Your baseline comfort with a simple, repeatable pattern.
Not the same as
Holding one pressure indefinitely; the programmed session still contains timing and release controls.

Pulsating Pumping
Instead of maintaining one flat target, the controller makes smooth pressure variations around it during the vacuum phase. The larger programmed vacuum and release phases still govern the session.
Feels like
A smoother, wave-like rhythmic change.
Useful when you prefer
Movement around the target without rapid interval changes.
Search-language note
“Pulse pumping” usually refers to this type of rhythmic pattern; SmartTract calls it Pulsating Pumping.
Mode 03
Rapid Interval Pumping
RIP creates a faster repeating pressure-and-ease pattern during the vacuum phase. Automation makes the timing repeatable without the user trying to reproduce each change by hand.

A more energetic sequence of distinct intervals.
Useful when you prefer
A faster-changing pattern with consistent controller timing.
Not proven to mean
Faster medical results, permanent enlargement or better recovery than another mode.
What about Advanced Rapid Interval Pumping?
Advanced RIP adds a configurable multi-level sequence, allowing stronger and lighter programmed levels with defined hold times. It expands pattern control; it does not change the evidence status. A more complex curve is not automatically a better medical protocol.

Choose by comfort and repeatability
Start with Static when you want the clearest baseline and a steady feel.
Try Pulsating when you prefer smooth rhythmic variation around the target.
Try RIP when you prefer faster, more distinct pressure intervals.
Use a saved pattern when repeatability matters more than changing settings mid-session.
Do not choose by an unsupported promise
No published head-to-head human trial proves one SmartTract mode produces better erections.
No mode guarantees permanent size change or faster recovery.
A stronger or faster sensation is not evidence of a better session.
Comfortable, gradual use and following the current manual remain more important than the mode name.

What VED research supports—and what it does not compare
Clinical research supports vacuum erection devices as a category, but it does not establish a winning SmartTract pressure mode. Published studies usually describe session frequency, overall duration, postoperative timing or combination therapy. They do not directly compare Static, Pulsating and RIP using the same device and patient population.
Supported context
VEDs mechanically create negative pressure and draw blood into erectile tissue.
Human studies have evaluated scheduled VED use for ED and penile rehabilitation.
A 2024 scoping review found substantial variation in postoperative schedules.
Dedicated programs may improve compliance with continued device use.
Evidence still needed
A randomized comparison using identical pressure limits and session time.
Clearly defined Static, Pulsating and RIP algorithms.
Outcomes for comfort, adherence, erection quality, adverse events and recovery.
Enough follow-up to separate a preferred sensation from a clinical benefit.
Safety
The mode does not replace pressure limits or a release control
Use the current SmartTract Go user manual for setup, pressure limits, timing, stop conditions and cleaning. Begin conservatively. Stop if you develop pain, persistent numbness, significant bruising, blistering, marked swelling, cold skin or concerning discoloration. A faster pattern should never be used to push through discomfort.
After prostate, pelvic or penile surgery, timing and mode selection should come from the treating clinician. Read the separate VED after prostatectomy evidence guide and do not begin or resume pumping before surgical clearance.
Medical category evidence is not a mode-specific claim
Research involving traditional VEDs cannot be used as proof that SmartTract RIP, Pulsating or Static mode is clinically superior. Product settings also do not diagnose the cause of erectile dysfunction.

Can I combine Static, Pulsating and RIP?

Is Rapid Interval Pumping clinically proven to work better?
No head-to-head human clinical trial cited on this page establishes RIP as superior to Pulsating or Static mode for ED, penile rehabilitation, enlargement or recovery. Existing clinical evidence applies to VED use more broadly.
